Clashes erupt in Iraq`s Basra city
fighting involved mortars and gunfire and erupted soon after the security forces entered Al-Tamiyah neighborhood, bastion of the Mahdi Army at 5 am (0200 GMT), AFP reported.
Police confirmed an operation was underway against the Mahdi Army in Al-Tamiyah while the Sadr movement accused the security forces of trying to crush the group.
Sadr has ordered his fighters to observe a ceasefire he declared late August and renewed on February 22.
