Question Marks

to the concomitants of the crime as well as to the timing. The entangled questions that pertain to the two issues lead to the following scandalous outcome which must hold the Lebanese authorities and those concerned responsible.‏

Regarding the field issue, one may give attention to the following remarks:‏

- The gruesome murder took place in a way which proves that its perpetrators ridiculed the security apparatuses and services. The assassination did not take place using a booby-trapped car. Instead, automatic assault weapons were used in broad daylight and in a well-known and open area (where the criminals did not even bother to cover their faces). They seemed to be at ease as they perpetrated their crime. It appeared as if someone had set the scene for them in a way that would spare them an atmosphere of clashing with any security force or efficient guards. Besides, how did the perpetrators know the route of the slain minister and the time of his movement?‏

- Where were the security forces that must watch over the safety of the citizens and the officials in the country, particularly that the country, for sometime, has been living under the impact of widespread assassinations? Moreover, where were those apparatuses on which huge budgets have been spent and which have been recently equipped with new machines and individuals? What’s the use of their existence if they cannot execute their simplest duties? Why have they been unable to catch anyone or even provide a valuable tip? How could the murderers escape the scene so simply without being spotted or pursued? Lastly, why were the security forces late in reaching the crime scene?‏

Regarding the political facts, one may give attention to the following remarks:‏

- The assassination took place in a very sensitive and momentous stage, where the opposition was finishing the final touches to take to the street in order to topple the illegitimate government. Hence, the crime took place in order to frustrate this movement and give the chance to the authorities and the February 14 team to catch their breath and reorganize their agenda, giving them the ability to restore the initiative which they almost lost. In other words, the main benefit from the assassination flows in favor of the February 14 team and the authorities that autocratically control Lebanon.‏

- The crime took place after a series of warnings pertaining to possible assassinations. These warnings were cried out by the February 14 leaders headed by Samir Geagea and Walid Junblat advanced by the US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice. This issue creates serious questions concerning the background of these statements pertaining to how they were environmentally prepared coupled with their owners’ ties to the events on the arena.‏

Based on the previous points, the political arena, at present, is facing a stage of pulls in different directions. However, the authorities, represented by the February 14 team, will never succeed in stopping the train of the opposition that steams forward in the direction of toppling the band of those controlling the political decision in Lebanon.‏

The assassination may have delayed the date of launching the peaceful and democratic protests of the opposition team to topple the government, but it has not and will not terminate them. This is because Lebanon is experiencing a critical and historical stage, where two programs, which differ from each other pertaining to their roots and political tendencies, are battling against each other.‏

The first program is represented by the February 14 team that uses the US-led west as its ally to impose new political tendencies that will never meet with the history and political options of Lebanon relating to the geopolitical map of the conflict in the region. The other program is represented by Hizbullah, Amal movement, and the Free Patriotic Movement as well as all the other opposition forces that wish to reach the real independence of Lebanon distanced from all foreign interventions, which would save the real civilized identity of Lebanon. Based on this issue, the new assassination, which the February 14 team is exploiting to reach its political aims, will be useless. Therefore, the ceiling will remain confined to that which the opposition presented through a real solution such as accepting the issue of the national unity government, a government of real participation, not a government in which the ministers become false witnesses with one mission, endorsing the decisions of the illusive majority, particularly pertaining to critical and sensitive matters that relate to the destiny of Lebanon and its future generations. Alternatively, they can yield to the demand for early parliamentary elections especially that they are confident of the public support and that they represent the majority, as expressed yesterday by Saad Hariri.‏

Although these two demands are heavy and can add weight to the burden of those forcefully controlling the reigns of the regime through the illegitimate autocracy, the street will remain the nearest and most feasible option as long as everyone remains adhering to the rules of the democratic game and the constitutional peaceful change. Aren’t these the rules of the democratic game about which they always informed us and disturbed our lives each time they spoke about them? Therefore, let them understand these rules and stick by them!‏
